Redshift stands in for distance, so a thin slice of sky opened out into a wedge shows the Universe in depth. The clumps, threads and empty rounds you see are not an artist's impression of the cosmic web — they are the objects this register holds, one dot each.

The Sun sits at the centre; distance from it is redshift, and the angle is right ascension. Streaks pointing straight out are not structure — they are clusters of galaxies whose internal motions smear their redshifts, the classic 'fingers of God'. Drag to pan, scroll to zoom.
